A startling Verdict

“Slice the baby in half” was the judgment given to the two mothers who came to king Solomon for intervention. A shocking answer, especially for the mother of the living baby!

Soon after Solomon became King, two mothers approached him with their story. these women lived together, and each had delivered a baby three days apart. During the night one mother awakened to find her baby lying dead beside her. She cunningly stole the living baby from the other mother and laid her dead child in its place.

Later the other mother awakened and found her baby dead. Upon closer inspection, she realized this baby was not her child! A violent argument broke out between them, one that only a higher authority could solve.

Solomon became King after the death of his father, David. “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight… Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the men of the East” (1 Kings 4:29-30 NIV). This wisdom was now tested.

Solomon’s verdict to cut the child in half and give each woman a part must have horrified then real mother. Filled with compassion for her son, she shouted “Please my Lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” the other mother coldly responded, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!” Solomon wisely recognized the real mother and commanded, “Give the living baby to the first woman…she is the mother” (1 Kings 4:24-27, NIV).

We may not all have challenges like Solomon, but it seems like everyday there are more than enough decisions to make. Some choices are harder than others. I’m aware that there are times when I need insight to select the right options because my emotion sometimes gets in the way. I’m so glad there is help available.

The apostle James wisely reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God…and it will (generously) be given to him,” (James 1:5). Don’t look elsewhere; He will direct you to the right answer. He is only a prayer away.
