I’m an eyewitness, I saw it.
Just before I walked out of the tomb where history records Jesus’ burial, I caught a sign on the wall saying, HE IS NOT HERE, FOR HE HAS RISEN!
I was in a group visiting the lovely garden location that surrounds the place considered to be the burial tomb of Jesus. The garden is located close to the crucifixion hill. We are actually here, I thought, the place that held such heartache and disappointment for those who expected their Messiah to become King of the Jews. Instead, Jesus−this holy Son of God−was treated as a criminal.
I pictured the disciples hunkered down for three days behind closed doors, paralyzed with fear. Jesus was deserted by His disciples, ruthlessly humiliated, beaten, and stripped of His clothing. We were shown where Jesus spent His last night–a hole in the ground just big enough to lower a man inside, with no place to rest His head. Jesus certainly became a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.
I remembered reading how Jesus had confronted the Pharisee’s, the elders of the people, and the leaders of the synagogue during His three years of ministry. Their unbelief caused Jesus to condemn them as hypocrites, blind guides, and hard-hearted, words that stirred their furry.
These leaders, priests, and Pharisee’s plotted to overthrow Jesus and thought themselves to have succeeded. They were deceived into thinking they had the upper hand. Satan, too, figured he had the final victory.
Jesus had already predicted His final end. He told the people that His Father loved Him because “I lay down my life–only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.” (John 10:17-18, NIV). As I walked out of the tomb that day, the words HE IS RISEN were conquering words to me. Jesus was given “authority to lay [His life] down and to take it up again.” No one else has been given this power after death. That power was given only to Christ.
All who believe are the beneficiaries of that same power given to Christ by His Father. Those who have made the life-changing decision to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior can look forward to seeing Jesus sitting on the right hand of God.
I myself saw the empty tomb. HE HAS RISEN! Jesus had the final victory! Believers, it’s your turn. Are you ready?
