Exact Directions

Have you ever been given exact guidelines to build a particular project but changed the plan a little to satisfy your own ideas? Following any directions can sometimes be a real test for some if exactness is required.

Abram (later called Abraham) was given exact directions to follow if his future family from his own seed was to receive the blessing of God and the future land God would give to them.

God made a covenant with Abram and specified, “To your descendants I give this land from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates” (Genesis 15:18, NIV). God said, “I will make nations of you…I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants.”

Abram’s exact direction for this covenant was, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. Every male among you shall be circumcised. It will be the sign of the covenant between me and you… My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant” (Genesis 17:9-11). Obedience signified consecration to the Lord. As long as Abraham and his offspring kept this covenant, they would receive God’s blessings.

Noah was given exact directions to build an ark and he precisely followed what God asked him to do. Why was Noah building an ark? His society was a lot like ours today. People were living their godless ways. For about 120 years, God used Noah to warn people of the coming judgment. “The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time” (Genesis 6:5).

God’s grace toward humanity had reached its limit. He was grieved that He had made mankind, but “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:8, NIV). He did all God commanded. There is not enough space to tell of Moses, Joshua, King David, and others who have followed God’s exact directions. Here is a challenge for you: search these names and read about the precise instructions each one was given.

Jesus has given believers exact guidelines to “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” (Mark 16:15, NIV).  Accuracy is required if we are to follow God’s guidelines and receive His blessings; we cannot fit his plan into our own unconstructive lifestyle. If we choose God’s way, we will not have to deal with many of the hurts the world has to offer.

Are you one who will follow His exact course for you and find grace in the eyes of the Lord?
